Church History of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Coral
Gables
March 3, 1950 - Seventeen people met at the home
of Miss Bertha Cline, to discuss the possibility of establishing a United
Lutheran Church in the Coral Gables area.
April 11, 1950 - Our first worship service was held in the original
Coral Gables Youth Center (where the current Publix Market is situated)
under the leadership of the Rev. J. L. Frantz. Fifty-one people were present.
On this same day, the Southeastern Regional Committee of the National
Lutheran Council assigned an area to us for development. The Rev. Frantz
and The Rev. William S. Avery supplied our pulpit and pastoral care through
the next few months.
May 8-10, 1950 - A formal petition for occupation of our assigned
area, and for organization as a congregation was presented to the Florida
Synod. The Synod, in turn petitioned the Board of American Missions on
our behalf. We surveyed our assigned area, as required by the Board, on
May 28th.
June 11th - The "Board" considered our request for a mission developer,
and a call was subsequently issued to The Rev. W. Baxter Weant who at
the time was pastor of Union Church, Salisbury, NC.
October 1, 1950 - Pastor Weant officially assumed his duties as
mission developer for us.
October 15, 1950 - We celebrated our first observance of Holy Communion,
with pastor Weant as the officiant, with 50 persons communing.
November 1950 - The Women of the Church organized with a charter
membership of 42. Mrs. C.R. Lindquist was elected President. The Luther
League was organized with W. Scott Tefft, Jr., President.
November 19, 1950 - "St. Mark's United Lutheran Church" was chosen
by popular ballot to be our name.
February 1951 - The Board of American Missions authorized our purchase
of a parsonage at 1426 Garcia Avenue, Coral Gables, for a total cost of
$18,962.50. We raised $1,800.00 as the down payment.

Miss Bertha Cline, A.F. Dickey, E.D. Hart, V.H. Julifs, C.H. Lindquist,

and W.S. Tefft, Sr.

to serve as our permanent pastor.

same day, we organized as a congregation. Rev. Frantz conducted the service,
and President Royall Yount, of the Florida Synod, was our speaker. Ninety
adults and thirty children were received as charter members. A Constitution
and By-Laws were adopted. Following the service we held a Community rally,
with The Rev. Dr. L.A. Thomas as our speaker.
May 8, 1951 - St. Mark's was received into the Florida Synod.

Robert Wavrek as President.

located at the intersection of Bird & LeJeune Roads.

for permission to build a church.
January 16, 1952 - The Coral Gables City Commission reversed the
verdict and we were given approval to begin construction of our buildings.
Preliminary plans were adopted, and A.F. Dickey was appointed Chairman
of our Building Committee.

numbered 155 confirmed and 221 baptized members.

congregation to design the buildings, and Earl V. Wolfe as supervising

contract totaling $76,730.00 for the construction of our first unit (the
Sanctuary).
February 21, 1954 - Saw the organization of our first complete
Sunday School, with classes for everyone.

on the church site. Pastor Weant was liturgist for the service and President

a call with the Board of American Missions for the Florida Synod. The
Rev. Charles Corbett, father of current member, Lois Higman, served as
an interim pastor.

The church grew to a baptized membership of 750. But, as times changes
and people moved away, membership dropped.
February 2, 1968 - Pastor Bergstresser died rather suddenly.
September 1, 1969 - The Rev. J. Bruce Weaver was subsequently called
as our 3rd pastor.
1970's - The traditional Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and program
(planned and presented by the choir) was first held. A new Lutheran Church
Women (LCW) was formed. They published a cookbook of favorite "pot luck"

membership to St. Mark's, and their pastor, The
Rev. Charles Robertson, was called as our 5th pastor, to serve
with Pastor Perry.
1990 - Shortly thereafter, an already approved plan for completely
renovating the chancel was begun. The entire area was removed (elevated
platform, communion rails, altar, choir pews, lectern, pulpit, etc.) to
be re-built at floor level with free-standing altar on a small raised
platform, reading desk, and new communion rails (also at floor level)
further to the front of the chancel.
1991 - The purchase of a new Allen Electronic and Lauck Pipe organ
(built especially for our church) was approved. It was paid for by people
buying different parts of it, such as the various size pipes, keys on
the keyboard, etc.

May 8, 1994 - The new chancel was rededicated with Bishop Laverne
Franzen presiding.
